Brian, Brian, Brian, what are you at? Brian Cowen you have promised us a 'fairer, stronger Ireland' in today’s budget.
Giving us back our own money won’t make Ireland fairer. Giving more money to health, social and affordable housing and those who need it most will.
Giving over a Billion in tax breaks may help you with the electorate but it is a short-term feel good. Eaten bread is soon forgotten and if you give tax cuts, welcome though they may be they do not make us a fairer society.
You make society fairer by allowing people to have their own home or to rent high quality homes from their councils.
You make a fairer society by making sure people are treated promptly and that our hospitals are clean, have enough beds and by ensuring that rich or poor, east or west that we all have equal access to treatments.
You make a fairer society by helping the disadvantaged get access to education and training. You make sure that people who are addicted to alcohol, drugs or gambling get access to treatment by funding help for them. You make sure that just because you are poor that you have a basic standard of life and an equality of opportunity to improve that standard.
All that money to spend and all you can do is give it back to us. What a missed opportunity Brian.
