Read this story in the People newspaper about 3 councillors who tried to get the council staff to follow the decision of the elected councillors. They ended up in the Supreme Court and have to pay massive legal fees.
All this because they tried to get the management to follow a resolution of the councillors to deny planning permission to a pet crematorium. This is their legal right to refuse or grant permission under Section 140 of the Local Government Act.
This case clearly shows that councillors are being sidelined by management in the most blatant way and when they do challenge the system they are financially punished unlike management whose legal fees would have been met entirely by the council.
This system stinks but will Gormley change it?
