Jim Corr is to assume the leadership of the Fianna Fail party until a new leader is elected, it has been announced today.

Corr (46) found fame with his sisters in the folk/rock band "The Corrs" in the 1990s when he came to the attention of Brian Cowen and FF when he played in their tent for tenners which were tucked into his underpants by tipsy cabinet ministers and their developer friends.

Corr succeeds Cowen following his resignation earlier today.

Corr says he is very comfortable with the job as he knows there is no way that FF are organised enough to be involved in any plans for a New World Order saying "these guys can't even agree among themselves never mind the CIA, Royal Family and international Jewry, though a few of them do look a little like the Lizard People behind 9-11."

Corr's main priorities will be

keeping the FF party together long enough to elect a new leader
helping to rebrand the party as a realistic option for the March elections

Wednesday's Liveline (RTÉ Radio 1, weekdays) featured predictable wailing about the profane language ofMrs Brown's Boys , starring Brendan O'Carroll, and The Savage Eye , with David McSavage. Joe Duffy dissected the merits of the two TV comedies. Duffy said McSavage was a good actor but was sniffy about his fans in the press. "All the TV critics and The Irish Times love David McSavage and his right-on humour," said Duffy, "but they don't like Brendan O'Carroll because he's too mainstream."

Duffy then delivered the coup de grace: Mrs Brown's Boys got 760,000 viewers, The Savage Eye only 130,000. The public's verdict is the only one that matters to a mainstream figure such as Duffy.

Micheal Martin- Survivor?

Micheal Martin may yet get his chance to lead the Fianna Fail party....but only after it is defeated and its former leaders are gone will he inherit the prize.

But Martin will be an Admiral Donitz leading a doomed organisation still trying to exert power and prestige it no longer has.

Like Hitler's successor Martin will be in charge of nothing with nothing to do but arrange the surrender and wind up of the party. Whatever dreams he held of leading a real government or even effecting change will be gone forever when Brian Cowen leads Fianna Fail into the valley of death on March 11th in one last crazy calvary charge at the cannons.

But this time it won't be the Light Brigade who fall, it will be the Heavy Brigade, some of whom, Harney, Ahern, Dempsey, Cullen, O'Keeffe have already fallen from their horses to join the likes of liar Beverly "Licence Fee" Flynn.

Cowen will charge onwards even as his officers openly question his ability to command and other disloyal troops try to make their own way by distancing themselves from the party, but it will be too late for them.

They are surrounded by their enemies, outmaneuvered, under-gunned and out of ammo in a war of their own creation.

Cowen has even been betrayed by his former Minister of Defence and Propaganda chief Willie O'Dea. It is too late to fire him, as he already did that and he now lacks the power to string him up with piano wire. All he can hope for is that O'Dea is shot down with him and the rest on March 11th.

In the meantime Martin waits for the bomb to drop in the hope that he survives and is appointed Furher upon Cowen's demise.

50 feet below the gardens of Government Buildings, Cowen sits in his bunker receiving the last of his true supporters as they shuffle in to his presence.

Behind him stands the ever-loyal Brian Lenihan who has decided to stay with his Fuhrer to the end.

Though he won't admit it Lenihan is already planning for a world without Cowen, when the struggle for power is over and the rebuilding must begin from nothing.

Down the hall in the press office reports of imminent defeats and current set-backs flood in on an hourly basis while once loyal generals like Dempsey, Harney and Ahern resign their commission on the battlefield and flee the electorate in terror.

Morale is low and desertions are now rampant among the party members and the troops.

Cowen is forced to add meaningless titles and high office to those troops who still remain loyal, though their resources are nil and time is running out.

Over at Party Headquarters on Lower Mount Street there is chaos. The staff are shredding Micheal Martin's photographs under the watchful eye of the fanatical Hitler Youth leader Dara Calleary while the rest of the staff update their CVs and prepare to flee before the biter end.

The massively popular storm troopers of Labour and Fine Gael are circling Government Buildings as they wait for the regime to tear itself apart before they finally pounce and end the struggle.

For Cowen it is only a matter of time. Meanwhile he waits on news of the economic miracle which he predicts will divide his enemies and allow him to snatch victory from defeat.

Clew Bay Disaster memorial

Further to Any Other Business on the agenda for September's meeting of
Westport Town Council I have requested that Mayo County Council's area
committee for Westport ensure that the integrity of the memorial at
the Quay be respected by those using the area.

This should mean that any activities or inflatable recreation
equipment be kept at least 6 feet away from the memorail which marks
the Clew Bay Boating disaster of 1894 when 32 people drowned at
Westport Quays when their overloaded boat capsized.

Former Green Party leader, now junior minister, Trevor Sargent has rejected an allegation that he tried to influence gardaí to drop a prosecution against one of his constituents.

The Minister for Food and Horticulture is alleged to have sent several letters to gardaí investigating a complaint against the constituent who was later convicted of threatening and abusive behaviour and fined €500.

Garda Commissioner Fachtna Murphy has requested an urgent report regarding Mr Sargent's correspondence with gardaí about the prosecution from the head of Garda division which investigated the case.

The Greens make me sick!

What makes me sick about the Greens is their behaviour over the resignation of Willie O’Dea.

They supported Willie in a vote of confidence, then Senator Dan Boyle baulks, (why didn’t the Green TDs baulk?) so John Gormley has to rush around to tell Cowen that Willie can’t stay. The Greens demand his head but Cowen talks them into letting Willie go in his own way. Gormley agrees to this and plays down the Green’s role in getting rid of Willie.

The next day some of the Greens try to take credit for the resignation but their official line is that Willie knew he had to go and went of his own accord. We all know nothing could be further from the truth.

Now Dan Boyle is saying he takes no pleasure from Willie’s resignation.

The Greens wielded the knife that took Willie out, (now this was the right thing to do as Willie did not have the guts and good sense to resign) but now they don’t want the blood on their hands.

The Greens don’t have the courage of their convictions. If Dan Boyle hadn’t baulked when he did Willie would still be in office and Gormley and Co would have carried on as business as usual.

When pressed to act they still fumble by not demanding the resignation clear and simple but rather sneak around in the background and go along with Cowen’s face saving strategy for Willie so Willie can claim the high ground that he was hounded from office by his enemies in the media as opposed to being an absolute disgrace of a man who has proved himself unworthy of seat in the Dail never mind in the Cabinet.

It would seem that the most accurate analysis of the Greens is from Deirdre De Burca who seems to have hit the nail on the head when it comes to defining the rot in the Green Party.

The Greens are rotting, its time to chuck them in the compost bin of Irish Politics along with Willie.

Senator Dan Boyle lobbed a live grenade into Irish politics before taking a dive into his bunker in Cork where he will now hide out until the issue dies down, Dan wants to flag to his supporters that he's a good guy with principles but he lacks enough principles to force Willie to go.

Danny-Boy said he had no confidence in Slick Willie O’Dea, the diminutive, mustachioed mouse-that-roared-lies to a court, from Limerick.

Danny-Boy is not alone in not having confidence in Slick-Willie and indeed it could be argued that very few people have any confidence in this Government, it must be said that the vast majority of people in this country feel that Willie did wrong and that Willie must go.

While FF seem to be immune to this sensation of accountability the rest of us are not. We are weary of sleeze, we are weary of corruption in high office and we are weary of Government Ministers not being accountable for their actions.

Danny-Boy may lack the courage to back up his words but the rest of us should not, so email that Taoiseach taoiseach@taoiseach.gov.ie and tell him that Willie has to go!

I'm beginning to pity "colour" writers like Miriam Lord. Irish politics is becoming so absurd it is hard to mock even in a surreal way.

We have a solicitor, who is a Minister, who lied under oath yet who won't resign his office. If he lies to a court then how can he be trusted not to lie to the House or to the Government itself?

In the UK Johnathon Aiken and Jeffery Archer were both brought before court for similar offences and got prison sentences.

Will Willie be brought to court to account for his lies, will he have to resign his Ministry, Will he he fuck!

Fianna Fail are laughing at us! They're laughing cause we just keep letting them away with it.

Minister for Defence Willie O’Dea is to make a personal statement to the Dáil later today regarding a sworn affidavit he made in defamation proceedings that he later admitted was untrue.

An untrue statement is a lie, isn’t it?

Is our diminutive Defence Minister a liar? Is he Ireland’s Pinocchio?

Did Bertie Ahern carve him, in his own image, from a little lump of Limerick lumber?

Mr O’Dea has been under mounting pressure to clarify how he denied in a sworn statement in April 2009 that he told a journalist the previous month that a Limerick Sinn Féin candidate Maurice Quinlivan owned a property in the city where two prostitutes had been recently arrested.

In the Limerick Chronicle on March 10th last year, Mr O’Dea responded to criticism by Mr Quinlivan of the high cost of having six civil servants working for the Minister on constituency matters.“I suppose I’m going a bit too far when I say this, but I would like to ask Mr Quinlivan is the brothel still closed,” the article quoted Mr O’Dea as saying.

Green Party TD Paul Gogarty has accused his former colleague Deirdre De Burca of making 'outrageous' and incorrect claims about the party. [Brilliant example of Gogarty at his best]

Mr Gogarty said the claims were 'clearly designed to deflect from the real reasons' for her resignation. He said there was no question over the leadership of John Gormley following the resignation.

The TD said the party were 'shell-shocked' by her announcement, but he said the Green Party was a united party.

Paul Gogarty is the same TD who resigned as his party's spokesperson for Education but held onto the chair of the paying position of Chair of the Oireachtas Committee on Education, the same TD who threw himself on the ground and faked a fit when he was criticised at a public meeting and the same TD who told Deputy Stagg to fuck-off in the Dail.

Who cares what Gogarty's opinion on De Burca is? A man who behaves as he does cheapens politics.

Lee hits sea of public opinion

The tide is beginning to turn on the Lee. The Lee has flowed strong and steady since its election to Dublin South and again it flowed very steadily out of the Dail this week carrying a lot of public opinion with it, but like all rivers when the river meets the sea it loses its dynamic and its speed and becomes mingled with the larger body.

George Lee has been able to carry his 27,000 votes along with him so far and with the surprise and hast of his departure, public opinion has stayed in its default support position and this was reflected in the Live Line Poll .

But now as Lee loses his speed hits the sea of public opinion and as Fine Gael tells its side of the story, the tide is beginning to turn on him.

Expect lots of sympathetic coverage in the papers this Sunday but brace yourself for a serious backlash after that.

Lee did not resign on principle, he did not resign over an issue, he resigned because he thought Fine Gael were not treating him as a VIP. Used to being the centre of attention at RTE, Lee found the backbenches a cold and lonely spot far from the heat of the action, this coupled with having to conduct clinics, deal with the public on mundane issues and not feature on the news since his election meant that the sheen soon went off Irish politics for Lee.

DE BURCA RESIGNATION

"I believe that we have lost our way as a party and have gradually abandoned our values and our integrity since becoming part of this Government" says former Green Party Senator Deirdre De Burca in her final letter to John "Gormless" Gormley.

Ms De Burca, in her resignation letter, has shown the qualities which made her such an attractive (politically speaking) candidate for the Greens and showed why once upon a time the Green Party were a noble party.

Despite the vitriol and spite reigned on the Greens (from this blog and others) it seems that deep down inside the Green Party there is (or was) the heart and soul of what made the Greens such an honest and respectable party they once were.

The Greens were respected by the electorate as a honest, left leaning, and caring party of the environment who genuinely wanted to make this country a better place.

However this respect was soon worn away after just a few months of government with Fianna Fail and was evidenced by the absolutely soul-destroying local election results of June 2009 which saw the Green party completely abandoned by the electorate.

Ms De Burca is completely correct in stating the Greens had lost their way; that is obvious to all political commentators. With every passing week the line differentiating between the Greens and Fianna Fail is becoming harder and harder to see. According to Ms De Burca "in many respects [The Greens] have become no more than an extension of the Fianna Fáil party"

Ms De Burca went on to tell Mr Gormley "It is with regret also that I must also inform you that I have lost confidence in you as party leader" and in that, she joins the ranks of the wider electorate including many within the Green Party and its supporters.

Ms De Burca goes on to say what everyone else is thinking, namely that the Greens are "slowly haemhorraging support because of a growing public perception that we have lost the courage of our convictions and have become no more than an obedient 'add-on' to Fianna Fáil".

In her resignation letter De Burca showed the courage and principle which built the Green Party, however her letter is now a footnote to the demise of that same political force.

The only fault Political Quote has with Ms De Burca and her resignation is that it came too late for her and for her party but for one shining moment Ms De Burca showed, once again, the principles which made her and her party universally respected.

Just over a year ago three councillors quit amid claims of a growing split between the leadership and grassroots.

When Letterkenny town councillor Neil Clarke resigned in December 2008 he said he had become disillusioned with the party chiefs and felt he could not go before voters again as a Green.

Within weeks, Cork city councillor Chris O'Leary and Dublin representative Bronwen Maher left the party.

Mr O'Leary, who had been one of the most senior party figures in Munster, said he believed the Greens had followed a "stay in government at all costs" agenda.

Ms Maher accused the leadership of unethical conduct and criticised its failure to speak out at Budget cuts.

He should at least have waited until the contracts had been signed before throwing sods in the air. I am glad to say that one of my Labour colleagues in Westport caught a sod and posted it back to the Minister. Well done to him. The Minister can bring the sod with him when he delivers the contractor and the money to that school.

Tony Blair smooth criminal?

When did Tony Blair, former Prime Minister and head of government, become the sole individual responsible for the war in Iraq?

This war was supported by the majority of MPs, including the Tory Party and most of the popular press.

Where is Iain Duncan-Smith of the Tory Party? David Cameron still says the war was correct.

It is right that Tony Blair is called to account for his actions and reasons for the war in Iraq but it is only just that every MP who did so is also called to account. Its called collective responsibility, its democracy, its accountability.

Tony Blair was not the lone gunman on the grassy knoll, there were hundreds standing with him, let them stand with him now.

Emmet Stagg had challenged Deputy Gogerty on his sincerity as Gogerty whinged to the nearly empty Dail chamber about his dilemma of having to support very harsh budget cuts to the vulnerable for the better good of the country.

In response all Emmet Stagg said was what any citizen would have said or thought as they listened to Gogerty wringing his hands despite his full support for all measures of the budget.

Gogerty then launched a verbal blast at Emmet Stagg never before seen in the Dail beginning his tirade with the words “With all due respect…..”

Not since Bruno Ganz’s performance as Hitler in Downfall have we witnessed such a performance. In the same way that no-one in the Furher-Bunker was allowed to question Germany’s ultimate victory even as the Russian Tanks rolled overhead, no-one is allowed to question the sincerity of Deputy Paul Gogerty as he and his colleagues punish the poor, vulnerable and low-paid for their mistakes and the mistakes of the rich and greedy.

But Gogerty has no bile for Lenihan and Co only for those who question his sincerity. Sincerity is everything to Gogerty, fairness, responsibility, justice are words he doesn’t understand but don’t dare question his sincerity.

Deputy Gogerty was directly addressing Emmet Stagg in the Dail yesterday but really he was talking to all of us, “Fuck you, Ireland, Fuck you!”

Former Bosnian Serb leader Radovan Karadzic is apparently still alive!

He denies 11 charges of genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity, dating back to the Bosnian war.

Certain charges are related to the 1995 massacre of 8,000 people at Srebrenica.

Karadzic, who is defending himself, was arrested in Serbia and brought to the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia last year, after more than a decade in hiding.

Just when the world had forgotten about this nasty little man he's back in the news claiming his defence team aren't ready to defend him in court. Well to be fair to them it can't be easy to come up with a defence for a monster like him.

I see the loonies are at it again.

This time they are trying to stop another looney from speaking on the BBC.

Some loonies want to stop British National Party leader (and looney) Nick Griffin from appearing on Question Time and have lodged appeals with the BBC's governing body to prevent his appearance.

Earlier this week Nick Griffin called for two British Generals to be hung as war-criminals for their actions in Iraq and Afghanistan, though Nick only called for them to be hanged after they criticised efforts by political parties like the BNP to hijack military heroes and pride for their own political purposes.

Also appearing on the show are Justice Secretary Jack Straw, shadow community co-hesion minister Baroness Warsi, Lib Dem home affairs spokesman Chris Huhne and black writer Bonnie Greer; though no-one has tried to shut them up.

The move to ban looney Nick Griffin from the programme began after an academic warned Mr Griffin's appearance could boost support for the BNP as happened when French far-right leader Jean-Marie Le Pen made his prime-time TV debut in the 1980s.

Well, in this blogger's opinion you have to have Nick on because 940,000 people voted for his party, because he has a right to be heard and his appearance gives the others participants the opportunity to hold this looney up to public scrutiny so we can all see how ridiculous and horrible he and his followers really are.

David Fallon a Labour Party candidate for Westport Town Council, has condemned as hugely wasteful the €1.2 million which Westport Town Council spent on the controversial second bridge over the Railway Line Walk in Cloonmonad.

Calling the development, "a bridge to nowhere" David Fallon says the construction of the bridge marked "a high point of hubris for the councillors and officials who backed the plan which saw €1.2 million of ratepayers money spent on the bridge and road that goes nowhere and serves no purpose.

"I am appalled that such an amount of public money could be spent on a project which had no guaranteed return for the council in the short to medium term. This project should never have gone ahead without a proper safety net for the council's finances.

"The 7 councillors who backed it played roulette with the town's finances and have lost and now the town is out of pocket to the tune of €1.2 million.

"This bridge was supposed to be about housing but what it really was about was keeping the housing boom going in Westport. It was built by the council with the single purpose of opening up lands to development and the cost was met by the council, who were supposed to re-coup the money in development levies as the area was developed.

"Well there has been no development and there have been no levies and there won't be for years to come, meanwhile Westport Town Council and the citizens it serves are €1.2 million out of pocket as we enter the worst recession in our history. But there will be no complaints from the 7 councillors who backed the project nor from the Chamber of Commerce who lobbied strongly for it.

"So it is important to note, especially when one hears Fianna Fail, Fine Gael and Sinn Fein councillors and candidates go on about rates and waste, to remember that only Cllr Keith Martin from The Labour Party and Independent Cllr Martin Keane opposed this bridge from the start and voted against its development.

"At the time Cllr Keith Martin and Cllr Martin Keane, along with Westport Civic Trust were lambasted as being against development and housing by their 7 colleagues on the council but in the end they have been proved correct and it stands to their credit that they never wavered in the their opposition to this unnecessary bridge to nowhere.

"Now we are left with a bridge that goes nowhere and that section of the Railway Line Walk has been left in a disgraceful state. When elected to Westport Town Council I will work with Cllr Keith Martin and Cllr Martin Keane to ensure this kind of development never takes place again and I pledge to develop the area between the two bridges as a park which unlike the bridge will serve a purpose and will serve all the people of the town!"

Labour's Cllr Keith Martin has told the Minister for Education Batt O'Keffee TD "to keep his sod until he presents the pupils of Westport's Gaelscoil na Cruaiche with a contract for their new school."

Cllr Martin has taken the unusual step of posting the actual sod turned by Batt O'Keeffe at the school's site last week to the Minister's office in Dublin with a letter asking him to return the sod only when he has secured a contract for the building work.

"It is most unusual that a sod turning ceremony should take place without a contact being in place to begin the building. I think the sod turning by the Minister has more to do with the upcoming local elections than with the provision of a school building.

"The problem is that this school was given the go-ahead in 2006 and the question is why are the pupils and their parents still waiting for their much promised building and why was it only Fianna Fail councillors and the Cathaoirleach who were invited to the ceremony and not all nine members of the council?"

"You only have to look to Davitt College in Castlebar who have had so many false starts to their sports hall to see where this kind of empty gesture gets you. No sod should be turned until a contract is in place. Anything else is just for show.

"I have been involved in the campaign for a new school building since my election in 2004, I attended every rally and protest for the school here in Westport and I met with the parents and management when they presented the petition to the council looking for a site and at that meeting promised them my full support.

"As Chairman of the Pairc na Coille residents association and as the only councillor on the Golf Course Road I facilitated the proposal to find a site on the Golf Course Road for the school and as a councillor I voted to sell the site to the Dept of Education for the school when Westport Town Council granted full planning permission for the site.

"I have also made numerous representations on behalf of the school and the Parliamentary Labour party, have at my request, asked several Parliamentary Questions on the issue.

"I welcome the news that the school is once again back on the agenda after three years of no action what-so-ever but the school has been waiting 14 years for a new building and I think it is just a joke that Minister can swing into my area and turn a sod for a building without a contractor being appointed.

"I only hope that there will be real action on the school but in the meantime the Minister can keep his sod until he delivers a contract. Then he can have his ceremony and I hope everyone will be invited this time!"

Labour's Candidate in Westport, Cllr Keith Martin, has launched a new YOUTUBE video, which uses Google Earth to zoom in on Westport to dramatic music. This the second online advert in Martin's campaign which aims to attract younger and web-savy voters to his cause.

The theme of the video is that "things can only get better with Cllr Keith Martin" and the viewer zooms in from space across Europe and the UK to zoom in on Clew Bay and ultimately the town of Westport.

Entitled "Small World-Big Decisions" the video urges voters to support the Labour Candidate in his bid to secure a seat on Mayo County Council under a campaign of change and that "Things can only get better!"

According to the councillor "Its a positive message which shows how Westport and County Mayo are part of a much bigger world and that we have big decisions to take to tackle the current crisis. I am saying that I am the man to take those decisions. My campaign and this message is a positive one, I am pointing out that things can get better, that we can work together as a community to fight the effects of this recession. JOB LOSSES and service cuts at Dublin Bus are a matter for management and unions at the company and not the Government, Minister for Transport Noel Dempsey said last night.

So what's the point in having a Minister for Transport?

Mary Harney has no direct intervention in the HSE so why do we have a Minister for Health? Surely someone else can write out Drumm's cheque?

John Gormley is powerless to stop incinerators even though he is the Minister responsible so why do we need him either?

Never mind scrapping Junior Ministers, lets get rid of everyone except Cowen and Lenihan, and we could keep Coughlin for the comedy value.

Today Gormeless Gormley has flip-flopped on the issue of the incinerator and now he says he can do something to limit the project but he doesn't seem to be sure what that is!

Gormless by name, Gormless by nature he is facing the dedicated and very real ire of his constituents if he does not act decisively.

The Poolbeg incinerator may turn out to be John Gormley's funeral pyre.

I will say one thing for Michael McDowell, though I never liked him, he would have quashed the Poolbeg incinerator plan no matter what.

Today we read of John Gormless Gormley's poor imitation of Pontius Pilote with his hand-washing, hand-wringing attempts to get out his commitment to stop this project.

The Dublin 4 incinerator will be the first of its kind in the capital and one of the biggest such facilities in Europe, burning up to 600,000 tonnes of waste every year.

Gormley says "There are no effective provisions within current waste management law or policy which would enable me, as Minister, to intervene directly in a PPP project which began more than a decade ago, and where tenders were approved two years before I took office,"

The man is a waste of space. Recycle him, better still, incinerate him.
